    Easy to use professional product!

I relined my wood stove with new firebricks and cemented them in place with a well mixed mortar mix using this. Then I filled all remaining joints with the same mix and let it dry overnight . Next morning all was hardened up very strong so I built a fire. Excellent product that air dried extremely hard and fire resistant! I am going to build a propane fired muffle furnace to fire assay and test various mineral samples, using the remainder of my bucket of fire mortar mix. Plenty left!

Works at the temperature it says it should

This stuff is hands down the best stuff for forge and kiln repair. So far so good at one firing cycle at forging temp on the forge and 2.1kF° in my kiln.Easy to mix, and easy to use. Make sure you use it just like any other mortar and wet down your bricks first so it adheres better. Made that mistake when I went to do it.I was skeptical with the temperature rating on it but it definitely holds up.

This product can be used to line a black Smith forge but the kawool needs to be tacked up,I welded some sheet rock screws around inside of my home built forge,I used a 20 gallon craftsman compressor tank which is actually made by devil bliss.the 211 cement takes 3 days to really harden fully if u buy this type because it dont require heat to cure.

    Excellent

My task was to convert a masonry fireplace from LP gas back to wood in preparation for installing a wood pellet insert. When the masonry stack was built, a cast iron gas line was installed through a wall of the masonry into the firebox. In my area, it is not enough to disconnect the gas line. The pipe inside the firebox must be capped or otherwise closed (makes sense). Unfortunately, the pipe stuck out too far and would interfere with the insert, especially if a cap were added to the end of it. Since this firebox is never going back to gas, my solution was to cut the pipe flush to the firebricks using an angle grinder, then fill it with this refractory cement. It worked wonderfully.

Building a pizza oven and for whatever reason one side of the ovens bricks didn’t adhere with the mix and the other side did, each side had its own mix and wasn’t the same batch. And as far as Amazon shipping goes I ordered 5 buckets of the 211 and only received 2. Amazon isn’t what it used to be, might be better to order from a different vendor.

    Fireplace Cement

So far so good. I chipped as much of the loose material out of one of my cracked and pitted prefab fireplace panels as possible and applied according to the directions. I let it dry for at least 8 hours and so far no damage to the repair from the numerous fires we’ve burned since. Even if I had to re-apply once a year it is so easy to do and gives you a measure of peace of mind for fireplace safety. For my situation a 10# bucket should last for years. Seems like a good product, well within the capabilities of any DIYer to use without issues.

Fine casting mix that with persistance can be made to stick overhead.

It is fine and leaves a smooth surface. I need to get more of this to finish getting the flue taper that I want. It is expensive; so if you have voids to fill consider using concrete and finishing with refractory mix. My 1956 fireplace was so poorly finished that I will think twice about lamenting the loss of quality in today’s construction. Then and now, what you don’t see can hurt you later.

    Doesn’t bond well

Thought that this mortar would be strong and heat resistant for my cap stones for my fire pit. I was very wrong. I used 2 buckets of this and got the job done but as it dried it instantly cracked and bonds were loose. I am very dissatisfied with this product and how it performed. My suggestion is that if you are doing same design as my fire pit you factor in poor bond from stone to stone.

Do NOT buy this low quality product!

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!This product is the worst purchase I’ve ever made!! Bought 3 tubs of it before I’d ever tried it…, BIG mistake!!Used it as directions advised, to make a base & to line the lid to my foundry. Slowly cured it, even had screws & stainless steel wire as a lattice, to help the cement with strength. Even before it was exposed to any heat, it began to crack. After the 1st low temp firing, the cracks grew larger, and pieces of it fell into the foundry! I could easily cut a groove in the concrete with my fingernail!Had to remove all of this lousy stuff, and recover the lid to my foundry with a real quality product.

Didn’t work on my ceramic grill fire bowl

Used the mortar to attach a piece of broken fire bowl in my ceramic grill. After applying the mortar let it dry for 24 hours. Put the fire bowl in my oven and slowly raised temp from 170 degrees to 500 degrees. Used an infrared thermometer and adjusted temp up when mortar temp and rest of fire bowl were stable in temp. The mortar seemed to work. The next day built a small charcoal fire in the fire bowl in my ceramic grill. Checked Temps around fiebowl. They reached up to 700degrees. After the fire died out, brushed off the ashes and checked the mortar joint. There were no cracks flaking or any signs of damage. A few days later I was going to use the grill and was surprised to see the joint had failed and the large piece of the firebox had separated. When I rubbed the mortar joint with my fingers the mortar sanded off. It had no structural integrity.

    Seems to be alright

Just applied it to close up an old damper (switching to ventless gas logs). Tough to get it to stick even with a damp surface but seems to be curing alright at room temp. Definitely get more than you think you need to. I thought 10 lbs would easily be overkill but it was just enough to finish the job.

    This works great

The rear refractory panel in the fire place had cracked in three places all the way through. Tried to purchase a replacement panel and it showed up broken twice. Cancelled that order and bought this cement. I was able to use it on my broke panel and repaired it just fine. I’m sure it is not as strong as an original but it has held up fine so far. It was also cheaper than the $180 panel.

I used this product to repair the refractory panels in my metal fireplace. Replacing the panels seemed overly expensive. I resurfaced the areas that were deteriorating with this cement and it worked super well. I found a video on it on Youtube. I preferred the dry mix over the pre-mix because of its better chance of a long shelf life for the unused portion. Would definitely recommend it.

This product is a lot like grout and works similarly in prep and application. I applied it to the bottom of my forge with fire brick pressed over and into it. I gently tipped the forge over trying to get it on a dolly to move it, but the refractory and bricks all stayed in place. I would have had a mess if it had not held together.

Put it in my forge and works great!

This cement is pretty easy to prepare, just add water until it’s the consistency you want for the application. I put it in my forge to cover a ceramic fiber blanket and prevent the fibers from escaping. In the areas where I only put a thin layer down, there are some slight cracks that formed under heat, but the pieces aren’t falling off or anything, just tiny lines formed. In the areas with a thicker layer of cement, there are no cracks at all, so the thicker layers are better and will definitely be able to handle the heat. The forge gets hot enough to turn steel glowing yellow-orange, so the cement can handle quite a bit of heat like advertised. This product contains a lot of cement powder, so if your application is relatively small like building a forge, there is way more than enough cement powder to get the job done, kind of wish they sold a much smaller container of this stuff. The cement cures very easily, just put a fan on it or leave it outside for 24 hours before putting under any heating and it will be good to go. This cement was also much cheaper than a lot of the others on Amazon and advertised greater max temperature conditions. Would definitely recommend for forging and other applications!

    Repairs fire place fire bricks

The back wall of my fireplace, after 20+ years, was badly cracked, with some bricks loose. I mixed up the whole container (1 quart is exactly the right amount of water) and worked the gooey mess into the cracks with a small trowel. Not easy, requires very careful attention to every crack and gap, but the result has been excellent. The fire box is stabilized so I do not need to worry about fire reaching the wall behind. I realize that this not exactly the approved application but it worked for me!

Works pretty well though it does crack if you put it on thick

Had some renters douse my firebox with water to extinguish it during a long, and very hot burning fire. This cracked and eroded the cement in the firebox quite badly. I removed all the loose pieces down to the metal mesh, filled the craters back in with this cement, let it dry and then followed the curing instructions to the letter. It cracked during drying before curing a bit, but the cracks appeared superficial. Over 6 months since then, it has helped up pretty well though it is breaking apart a bit in some areas and some pieces are coming loose. Overall, the firebox is still in much better condition than it was before I performed the repair, so there is that. After this winter season is over, I’ll chip away any loose pieces and apply another layer – which I suspect won’t need to be anywhere as substantial as the original repair I made. I do really like that this product was VERY easy to apply and work and it adhered extremely well to the existing masonry of the fireplace even while working. I did mist the existing masonry with clean water to dampen it before applying which probably helped. All in all, I would buy this product again.

    Fireplace Repair

I did some cleaning and repair of my fireplace mortar and wanted to use a high quality product that was made specifically for kilns and fireplaces. This did the job beautifully and was exactly the right amount. There was no need to buy a huge bag of fireplace mortar when this container was adequate to do the job and left a little extra for future repairs. I especially wanted to use a product that was made for this situation as standard mortar is not suitable for repair of mortar between fire bricks.

    Overall good product but annoying

So I like the performance and I like the container if comes in which can be used for various other things afterwards like cleaning my tools and doing the sponging of the brick. I’m not a professional mason but the consistency seems on par with what I’ve worked with before. It’s like a very fine fluffy concrete powder. It does dry rather quickly and it is super easy to over water which can also loosen it up. It sponges off great. It dries incredibly hard. The only fault I have with it is it took a while to arrive. I didn’t realize I needed as much as I did so I had to place multiple orders and ended up taking three weeks from start to finish to complete my pizza oven because I had to keep waiting for more to arrive. I was hoping it would be done in a day or two but ended up taking three weeks overall but six days to build and six orders. Unfortunately this product isn’t stocked anywhere else either so I was stuck with this process. And because of the weight of the product, over ordering and then returning it wasn’t a practical option.

    Best customer service ever.

First off I would like to note that Amazon customer support is non existent and they packaged the bucket of cement loose in a box with a couple other things. What happened is exactly as you’d expect. Since Amazon customer support doesn’t exist I had to contact Rutland. Within under 1 minute of sending them the information on what happened, as well as noting that I know it is not their (Rutland) fault, I received a phone call. All I can say is I have dealt with some top notch customer service in the past, as well as some bad customer service, but I can without a doubt say that Rutland customer service is the best I have EVER dealt with (Rutland if you’re reading this, give the guy I talked to a raise, every company could learn something from him). They quickly resolved the issue and in the future if I need any kind of cement I will definitely try to go with Rutland. I will also try to get my workplace to start using Rutland for their hole patching needs. I can’t speak for the quality of the product itself as of yet since i just got it but it’s cement, I’m sure it will be as good or better as any other comparable cement. Also the bucket it comes in is a good bucket, it was just packaged very badly by Amazon. Thankyou Rutland for the amazing customer service, I will definitely pick your products over others in the future as well as recommend them to others.

Ordered a forge off Amazon and it came with just the kaowool lining in it. Which people said worked just fine and I agree with them it probably does but I wanted a longer running set up. Mixed this up to the ratio suggested and it was the perfect consistency to coat the inside of the forge with. Only a couple uses in but it’s provided the desired protection.

    Do not apply very thick

This was super easy to mix with water and apply. It adhered very well to the floor of my fireplace insert. Following directions I cleaned FP and vacuumed loose dust. I used just 1/2 cup shy of one qt water to the 10# mix. Now it took all of my old lady muscle to stir and I had to use a pliers to open the tub. This is the floor of my FP insert which the coating had deteriorated all the way to the metal. In addition, it had gaps along top edges. This mix took a couple days to dry. Then the floor cracked in several places. I called the manufacturer and was told it won’t adhere to the steel. Well, it did! If I ever do this again, I would apply several thin coats and let it dry between each coat. Their solution was to scrape it up which was nearly impossible. They said I needed to apply furnace cement. I bought that and put a layer over the refractory mortar. It adhered well and filled the cracks. I should have put the furnace cement on first and then several layers of refractory. I thought all I needed was refractory mortar as that’s what the chimney sweeper recommended. Then I followed directions and burned a small fire for an hour and then added wood to have a really hot fire for an hour. It should be cured now!

    Refractory cement.

Purchased this refractory cement to redo/ repair the floor of my fireplace. I used a spray bottle with water to wet the pre-existing cement floor. Then mixed the refractory cement well to the consistency of peanut butter then moistened the old cement once again. This is key. **the refractory cement requires moisture to bond with the old cement and the old cement should be moistened **The refractory cement was applied with a large and small concrete trowel and worked with the smooth edge to cover the entire fireplace floor. It’s dried to a smooth like new condition. Good for several more winters and lots of fires.I’m very happy with the results and would recommend the product. It was easy to work with and dried to a very clean smooth finish.

Used this to parge joint lines in my cinder block fire pit so fill sand wouldn’t seep out. It was an easy process that took about 30 minutes to mix and pack in using a putty knife. Blocks are filled with sand and held firmly. Time will tell if the block will last longer before heat cracking.

Their service rep Will, informed me about their product and I found out I had actually ordered the correct mortar. Rutland 211 was used to repair my outdoor fireplace, easy to mix and apply. Not only can it be used as mortar, it can also be used to parge the walls. Will, you are a true professional! Thanks, Randy

    Good stuff..it works

Shipping was a little slow, but product is great. Repaired our fireplace, let it sit for 48 hours and since then we have had plenty of firewood burned in the fireplace with no problems whatsoever.
